Lesieli's story

Lesieli is a 63-year-old widow with two grown-ups. She lives with her youngest, for the eldest has married and has her own family. Lesieli provides for her son through her business of weaving.

She is a sole weaver, and for many years, she has been running her weaving business. She weaves taovala, mats and fihu, using white pandanus only. Lesieli sells her weaving to her relatives overseas and also to random customers who are interested in the work of her hand.

Her business was affected by the cyclones that hit Tonga in April, but she recovered her business and it is running actively now. She applies for a loan to buy pandanus for her weaving and also hire a group of women to help her with her weaving, for she has a huge order of five mats to be done before Christmas for an occasions.

Her son currently attends the university, and Lesieli's dream is to continuously support his studies so he can pursue his dream and become successful.
