A loan helped to buy more greens, fruits and vegetables.

Irene's story

Irene is 24 years old and lives in the town of Kibuli in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past 4 years, Irene has been working hard to manage her fruits & vegetables business, selling vegetables, greens and fruits.

To help expand her business, Irene has requested a loan of 2000000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more greens, fruits and vegetables, and will help Irene to generate greater profits. When Irene realizes more profits from the expanded business, she will be in the position to improve her standard of living by catering to home basic needs. Irene hopes that in the future she will be able to be a leading seller of fruits and vegetables.

Irene is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
