The Alegria (Happiness) group was formed more than two years ago by several women. They joined together to support one another. They met while working at their various jobs. Each group member is hopeful about improving the quality of her life especially in the areas of housing and nutrition.

One of them is Sra. Avelina who is a hairdresser. She runs a salon in her home. As a young woman, she took a hairdressing course and now has many clients. She is very happy with what she does since it allows her to support her family and most importantly, provide them with food.

Avelina now wants to improve the service she offers by buying a more comfortable hairdresser’s chair which can be used for hair washing and other hair treatments. She is asking for a loan to buy such a chair. She is grateful to Kiva partner Fundación Paraguaya for this opportunity.

About Fundación Paraguaya

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
