A loan helped to buy pandanus and also pay women to weave for her.

Selai's story

Greetings from Selai. She is 33 years old and married, with three children. They live at their own home in the island of Vava'u. She currently runs a weaving business where her mother and two sisters join her for weaving. Together they only weave mats with brown pandanus, then sell them to earn money for their families.

Because Selai just gave birth to her youngest child, she wanted to take a rest and hire someone to weave for her, including her mother and sisters. She applies for a loan to buy pandanus for her weaving, and also pay two women to weave her mats for her. Her sisters can just do it, but there are five mats needed for the end of November and she needs someone to help them with the weaving.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
