A loan of $375 helped buy fertilizer for farming business.

Vilma's story

Vilma, 46, is a friendly and courageous woman, married to Alejandro, 55, with whom she has 6 children. They live in their own house with the 3 of their children who still live at home. She started, more than 25 years ago, planting pineapple and coffee on land that she owns, a business that she operates with help from her husband. During harvest season, she also hires laborers who help with the very difficult job of harvesting the crops. She and her husband would like to improve the quality of their products. What she most likes about farming is spreading manure on the land because taking care of the land ensures a good crop even when weather and disease cut into her output. She proudly says that farming is her main source of income, an income that has made it possible for her to build a house and live without having to give up basic necessities. She would like to increase her harvests and her sales in the local market, the town's market being her outlet for sales since she doesn't want to sell to the local farm collective. This is Vilma's first MFP loan and she assures us that she won't violate the trust of the other members of her community bank with whom she enjoys a good relationship. She will use the loan to buy sacks of fertilizer to protect her pineapple crop.
