Maria Elena's story

María Elena B. is a member of the comunal bank El Cisne. She lives in the communityho f San Isidro in the parish of El Valle, located to the southeast of the city of Cuenca, adjoining the urban area of the city. It is bordered to the north by the parish of Paccha, to the east by Santa Ana, to the south by Tarqui, and to the west by Turi and the city of Cuenca. Agriculture and cattle are the traditional activities of the people of this area, and it also has the tourist attraction of Lake Cochapamba, full of reeds and its beautiful landscape, and Rayoloma, an ideal place to admire its reach to the city of Cuenca (among other attractions).

Our member is 37-years-old, married, and has 5 children ages 17, 14, 12, 10, and 2 years. Her first child isn’t in school, and helps with household chores. Her second is in high school, and the 10-year-old attends a community school. Her husband is a bricklayer, and thanks to their combined work, they have managed to build their own home.

María Elena sells pots and pans, but only on Sundays. She has been doing this for four years all around the area where she lives. She also raises livestock such as chickens, cows (whose milk is for her family’s personal consumption).

She has been working with Ibankito for nine years, and the loans she has received have helped her in her home, as well as her business. With the money she receives from the current loan she’s requesting, she will buy pots, pans, etc. to grow her business.

Her goal is to have her own capital to be able to grow her business by adding other household items to sell.
