A loan helped a member to buy a variety of multicolored yarns, for weaving traditional fabrics.

Mariposas De Chutuj Group's story

Many Guatemalan families have managed to get ahead thanks to the business of weaving and embroidering "huipiles", "cuts" and typical skirts. Besides continuing to preserve their culture, they also earn additional income.

This is the example of Ethelvina who at 24 years old successfully manages the business of weaving "cuts". Despite the fact that she has a teaching diploma, she only worked one contract for one year. Ethelvina is very happy because this business allows her to generate income and at the same time take care of her husband and one-year-old son. She has 5 workers who work the standing looms and produce an average of 20 "cuts" per month. As Ethelvina needs to invest in the business, she applies to KIVA lenders for the 1st loan. She will buy variety of multicolored yarn.

There are 7 women who speak the mother tongue K’iché ’and Spanish with difficulty. They are originally from the Department / State of Quiché. These women have joined this community bank of Puente de Amistad “Mariposas de Chutuj” with the aim of achieving integral development, through their textile businesses and access to small loans. They also benefit from participating in the "Microcredit Plus" loan, education and health services program. During the meetings, a facilitator shares information on 4 areas: health, business, family, women. (The child in the photograph is the son of one of the borrowers).

Thanks to the lenders of Kiva and Puente de Amistad, women will have an open opportunity.
