A loan of $5,800 helps a member to buy basic and essential supplies for her store.

Cielo Azul Group's story

Small neighborhood convenience stores, located in rural areas, are lifelines for much of the population in Guatemala. Genara, a 29-year-old married mother of two children (ages 4 and 6) is the proud owner of a convenience store. She began the business to help her husband, who is a weaver, to cover their household expenses. Thanks to her income, the couple has been able to provide for their children including their education. Genara’s business has grown and now it is time for her to restock her shelves. She is requesting her 1st KIVA loan to buy basic supplies including cleaning products.

Genara is the secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Cielo Azul” or “Blue Sky” along with 9 other Maya “K’iche” ladies. They live in the department/state of Quiche and sell vegetables, have convenience stores or are weavers of traditional skirts or “cortes”. Besides receiving loan support, the women participate in monthly educational trainings that are vital to their success and cover an aspect of 4 areas: health, family, women, business. The ladies empower themselves as they learn about women’s rights/roles and self esteem. Every other month, they have access to preventative health care services when a visiting nurse attend to their needs. “Microcredit Plus” is the name of this effective combination of loans, education and health care. (The children in the photo are children of the borrowers).

Thank you, KIVA investors, for lending a helping hand to Genara and her friends!
