A loan of $2,150 helps a member to buy avocados and perfumes wholesale.

Xenacorenas Group's story

For many women who are clients of Puente de Amistad, getting ahead and fighting poverty is better by joining forces with their husbands. This is what Antonia, a 41-year-old woman who lives with her husband, who is a carpenter, believes. She is the mother of four children (9-21), and all have received a full education. She, for her part, only studied for nine years.

With the vision of a better future for her children, 21 years ago she started selling avocados. For additional income, she also sells perfumes. Antonia knows that these businesses are profitable. She applied for the second Kiva loan to increase the inventory of the business. Antonia will buy avocados and perfumes wholesale.

Antonia and the other six Mayan Kaqchiquel women from the “Xenacorenas” communal bank live in the Department / State of Chimaltenango. They realize the benefits of accessing small loans, along with educational training and health care services. This is part of Puente de Amistad's “Microcredit Plus” program. Because they have little or no formal education, these business, health, hygiene and nutrition trainings are important.

Antonia shares, "The topic about the good investment of money has been very useful for me to take better control of the business."

Women implement this knowledge in textile, traditional clothing, vegetable and internet cafe businesses.

Kiva lenders are very important in financing these loans.
