A loan of $4,475 helps a member to buy boxes of toys and collectibles.

Mujeres Comerciantes Group's story

During this challenging time of the coronavirus, hardworking and determined women like Mirna, 37, seek creative strategies to offer the public classified second-hand products brought from the United States.

She is a married woman and has three children (12 to 17), who are enrolled in primary and secondary school. Mirna became a bilingual secretary, but due to a lack of employment, she decided to start her own second-hand clothing, shoes, and collectibles business.

Sales are slow, but little by little they are increasing, and Mirna wants to increase the inventory of the business. She asks Kiva lenders for the sixth loan to buy boxes of toys and collectibles.

Mirna is secretary of the Puente de Amistad Communal Bank “Mujeres Comerciantes” located in the Department / State of Quiché. There are six other women in the group who are of K'iche 'Mayan descent and participate in the "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, education, health).

The women meet monthly, and the facilitator continues to stress the importance of good hygiene, including hand washing, surface disinfection, use of masks, and physical distance. These preventive measures are especially important in rural areas of the country, as the health system is poor.

Mirna and her companions advance in their businesses of small dining rooms, weaving of typical “cuts” skirts, handicraft products, sale of products for personal use by catalog, and second-hand products, in this way to stay afloat.

Thank you, Kiva, for helping these women.
