A loan of $3,050 helps a member to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables to sell.

San Juan Group's story

Rosa is 26 years old and believes that "When you want to progress, limitations do not matter." This thought has helped her to be a determined woman who has survived many difficulties. She is one of six sisters and for eighteen years has helped her mother in the fruit and vegetable business. As a result of her father's passing, she and her sisters did not have the opportunity to attend school. Fifteen years ago Rosa started her own business selling fruits and vegetables every Sunday in the large market of the department or state of Quiché. The business has grown and she has used part of her income to cover her own and her household's expenses. She is applying for her first Kiva loan to buy a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables to sell, including tomatoes, avocado, onions, oranges, pineapples, and papaya.

There are seven Mayan K'iche women in this group who have businesses as seamstresses, raising farm animals (cows and chickens), and selling fruits and vegetables. At monthly meetings they make loan payments and learn about health, family, and women's and business issues. A facilitator from the organization informs them about the importance of varying their products, selling from home, and applying personal hygiene measures in the family environment to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. This useful combination of credit support, education, and health is called Microcredit Plus.

Thank you Kiva lenders for helping these women who want to fight poverty!
