Segundo Luis's story

Segundo Luis R. is 42 years old, married, and has 4 children who are called Segundo, 24 years old, Nelson who is 22, Luis, 19, and Jamie who is 13. They live in the neighborhood of San Francisco de Rumi Pamba about one and a half hours from Canton San Miguel in the province of Bolivar. The partner is a member of the rural group San Francisco de Rumi Panba which is made up of 25 members in total, of whom the majority work in agriculture and raising cattle.

All his life Segundo has worked in agriculture, the principal source of income for his family. Among the crops that do well in the area are corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, and mellocos (a type of tuber). He sells the products in the markets of San Miguel and Guaranda, and in the community when the merchants arrive.

Segundo requests the loan to buy liquid fertilizers, to pay the workers, and for the transport of the produce. His goal is to obtain quality products that he can sell at reasonable prices. The challenges that he has are that when the climate is unfavorable it affects the production and the prices fall since the product is not of good quality. Segundo solicited a loan before that he invested in supplies. He says that in his free time he likes to be with his family and they go out to walk by the river.
