A loan helped a member to buy sugar, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, caramel, food coloring and firewood.

Rio Negro Group's story

Magda is a 24-year-old, married mother with a 3-year-old son. She worked hard in school and received a high school diploma. Her husband is a farmer who grows beans, corn and tomatoes.

Ten years ago, Magda began a business, selling regional sweets made of peanuts, caramel and sesame seeds. She has planned carefully and is now requesting a Kiva loan to buy sugar, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, caramel, food coloring and firewood.

Magda is the treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Rio Negro” located in a warm area in the department/state of Quiche. There are seven ladies in the group who speak Maya “Sacapulteco.” Most of them make and sell regional sweets.

Since the women have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational sessions which give them relevant information about their businesses, families, their health and themselves. Every other month, the ladies have access to health care services! This useful combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus.”

Thank you, Kiva investors, for the vital role you play in the lives of these women! They are opening doors to a brighter and more prosperous future because of your loan support!
