A loan helped to buy farm inputs, such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizer.

Joyce's story

Joyce is a 52-year-old mother who lives with one child in Nyamira, a town whose surroundings have vast agricultural potential with numerous small farms, as well as vast agricultural enterprises. She is a woman who has farmed for the past 20 years, thus enabling her to support her family.

The major impediment to the development of smallholder farms in Kenya is the lack of short-term loans. Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, is working hard to support smallholder farmers in Kenya by providing them access to financing, which helps to guarantee their survival.

Joyce has taken this loan to buy farm inputs, such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizer, to boost the quality of her produce, earn more profits, and elevate her living standards. This loan is an opportunity she has never had before. Her irregular income and lack of collateral security were the main drawbacks that prevented her from accessing a loan from commercial banks. Thanks to Juhudi Kilimo and Kiva, Joyce and her family will have their lives changed as a result of this loan.

This loan is special because:

It finances dairy cows and agricultural equipment to grow small farms.
