In this Group: Claresa, Amie, Madgeline, Fatu, Lydia
Claresa F. is the leader of a group of five borrowers called Virtue Women. She is 58 years old, widowed, and has two children, 32 and 37 years old. She was only able to attend school through high school.

For 13 years, Claresa has been selling charcoal at the Somalia Drive in Paynesville, Liberia. She sells good quality charcoal, which keeps customers returning.

Claresa started selling with 1,000 LRD as working capital and now has about 12,000 LRD. She plans to use her 4,000 LRD portion of this 20,000 LRD group loan to buy more charcoal for the rainy season. Her goal is to get a warehouse that has the capacity to store about 200 bags of charcoal, develop her business and educate her children.

Note on LEAP:

During routine partner monitoring, Kiva learned that LEAP's delinquency data may be understated due to technical problems with their reporting software. Because this report is key to our analysis of the risk of this partner, delinquency or default rates on loans to this partner may be higher than we expect. For further details, see LEAP’s partner page on Kiva.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
