A loan helped purchase computer and educational software; improve safety of outdoor play area.

Ana's story

When Ana moved to the United States from El Salvador with her husband fifteen years ago, she found herself naturally falling into jobs that involved taking care of children. While working as an assistant at other daycare centers, “I was given more and more responsibility for the children we cared for,” she says. “Eventually, I knew it was time to open a daycare of my own.”

Ana enrolled in classes through a program for childcare providers run by Santa Clara County and learned the ins and outs of managing a childcare facility. The same program now helps her by referring new clients, and her in-home daycare is fully enrolled with children from eighteen months to eleven years old.

She is very proud of Cecy’s Day Care, which she runs with her husband. “I feel good doing my job,” she says. “My work helps others to be able to go to their work. I find it very gratifying, especially when I receive cards from parents to say ‘Thank You’ or for the holidays.”

Ana wanted to make improvements to her daycare, but, as an immigrant, she has not built up the credit history necessary to qualify for a small business loan from a bank. A $10,000 loan from Opportunity Fund will allow her to purchase a computer and educational software for the children, improve the safety of her outdoor play area, and invest in new recreational equipment. These improvements will help her to attract new clients. Eventually, she and her husband hope to be able to move the daycare to a larger space outside of their home.
