Mercedes Asuncion's story

Mercedes has been a part of the communal bank María José for nine cycles. She lives in the the parrish of Picoaza of the province of Manabí, ten minutes from the Portoviejo canton. In the part of the province, the residents have businesses in different areas.

Our member is a housewife and a great sales woman as well. She is 38 years old, married and has 3 children. For 11 years, she has been selling Romanel semi precious jewelry. She later decided to start a business selling matresses and beds. She set up a place in her house to have the business. This is a very hardworking family.

Her husband sells rice in 100-pound sacks wholesale and retail. He gets the rice from Guayaquil. She is the one who goes to make sure that what he buys is of good quallity, since at times there have been problems because they would only send it to the house and they suffered losses. At present, Mercedes has her own capital for the semi precious jewlery and the matresses, but she needs capital to sell rice. With this new loan that she will receive she will buy 100-pound sacks of rice to continue distributing rice in Portoviejo to the regular customers she has.
