Olga María's story

The Atenas Communal Bank of Ecuador is made up of a group of visionary women, like Olga Álvarez, who are prepared to help their families get ahead. Olga has been a member of this bank for ten years. Her house, although small, is her own, and she lives there with her husband, who works as a taxi driver, and five of their six children. The eldest daughter is married and lives elsewhere. Her 26- and 24-year-old work and help support the family, while the three youngest study in college and high school respectively. This bank is located in the city of Cuenca, capital of the Azuay Province, which is located in the southern part of Ecuador's Andean mountain range; it is the third most important city in Ecuador and is known for maintaining the tranquility and beauty of an ancient city. Its historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Olga has run a grocery store for 20 years. She works from 6 am until 9 pm. She is very happy to be part of this beautiful group of women since through the years they have all developed strong ties of companionship and friendship. With the loan money, she will buy rice, sugar, salt, pasta, cleaning products and personal care products to stock her store. Her goal is to be able to add on to her house.
