A loan helped to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizers and certified seeds to improve his farm yield and make more profits from sales to support his family.

Cheleste's story

Cheleste is known in his remote village in the Chuka area of Kenya for his captivating and beautiful smile and his undying and resilient nature. Despite adversities, he just smiles. Cheleste is a very hardworking and self-driven father.

At his farm, he keeps dairy cows and grows various crops. The main challenge that this enterprising man has often complained of is the high cost of farming inputs in his area.

In Kenya, agriculture is one of the most competitive industries, especially due to the high costs of operations necessary to improve farming. Such costs include the cost of land acquisition and inputs that have always skyrocketed.

To meet the high costs of inputs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions that sometimes impose very complicated procedures in loan distribution.

When Cheleste learned about Juhudi and Kiva from a Juhudi Kilimo loan officer, he became interested in the good work that Kiva does to support small-holder farmers. Cheleste is happy to have access to reliable micro-finance, and he attended regular training sessions to learn about savings and loans.

He is borrowing this loan to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizers and certified seeds to improve his farm yield and make more profits from sales to support his family.
