A loan of $6,025 helps a member to buy typical blouses and skirts.

Las Rosas De Chuilacal Group's story

Talented Mayan women have a long history of weaving that dates back more than 2,000 years. There are artisans who weave and embroider colorful textiles and among them are beautiful blouses or "huipiles" and typical "cut" skirts. Other women like Juana buy this product to sell it in nearby markets and in their communities. Juana is a 36-year-old woman who lives with her husband and two children, ages 8 and 15. Although she did not attend school, she does provide primary and secondary education for her children. Juana's business is moving slowly but surely, and it is time to offer new clothing designs to customers. Juana is requesting her first loan from Kiva to buy typical blouses and skirts.

Juana is the president of the Communal Bank of Puente de Amistad "Las Rosas de Chuilacal" group, and together with eight other women lives in a rural area in the state of Sololá. They hope to use this Kiva loan to invest in their traditional textiles, vegetables, firewood and daily consumer shops. In general, they meet monthly with a facilitator from the institution to find out about relevant topics based on four areas: health, family, women, and business. Women learn in this time of crisis to strengthen their business, take care of their health and take hygiene measures to prevent the coronavirus. A nurse communicates with them every two months. This useful combination of loans, education, and healthcare is called "Microcredit Plus."
