A loan helped to purchase pandanus for her weaving business.

Uaiti's story

This mother's name is Uaiti. She is 37 years old, and married to a carpenter. They have three children, all of whom attend school. Uaiti's husband was the sole provider for their family. His salary covers their daily needs, but as their children are growing, they are demanding extra care, and the expenses add up. Therefore, Uaiti has thought of a way to help her husband earn an income for their family. She sought help from her mother, who taught her tapa-making skills. Now, she runs her own business, and earns money for her family by making tapa.

Uaiti joins a group of ten women in her village, and they spend Saturdays making tapa. Uaiti sells her tapas overseas, but since the lock-down, she has been selling her tapas locally at a cheaper price. She hopes to borrow money to purchase mulberry for her business.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
