A loan of $4,475 helps a member to buy a large quantity of sports shoes.

Margaritas Chocolenses Group's story

Many women who are clients of Puente de Amistad learn from their parents in childhood to be merchants, and over time, establish their own businesses to contribute income to their family. This is how Regina, 65, shares it:

“At ten years old, I accompanied my mom to sell toys. For this reason, I only attended school for six years. I like being a businesswoman. Currently, I successfully manage sales of regional food, clothing, and shoes brought from the United States.”

Regina is a divorced woman and mother of four children (ages 36-48). Regina is requesting her first loan from Kiva to buy a large quantity of sports shoes.

The ten Maya K’iche women in the Communal Bank of Puente de Amistad "Margaritas Chocolenses Group" live in a rural area of the state of Suchitepéquez. They are determined to support their families. Thanks to the income from their businesses, (sales of food, jewelry, clothing, and shoes,) they are succeeding.

Regina is president of the communal bank, and calls monthly meetings for her colleagues to make their loan payments. Later, they also participate in educational training - part of the "Microcredit Plus" loan, education, and health services program. They learn about planning, budgeting, investment and savings, health, hygiene, and nutrition.

Kiva lenders, by partnering with Puente de Amistad, help Mayan women build their businesses, earn an income, educate their children, and empower themselves. Thank you!
