A loan helped support Herd Supply as we upcycle coarse wool into high-quality natural pillows & dog bed stuffing.

Leah's story

I was born and raised on a small sheep and produce farm in Glastonbury, CT. We lived in the apartment over my dad’s office, and due to the unique set up, I spent more time with sheep than people. This led to my first word being “baaa” and cemented my lifelong love of sheep.

After taking a job in the Boston area, I moved to Cambridge. I would drive home on the weekends to help my dad with his farm to maintain a connection with the land I grew up on. Living in such a dense city made me realize the importance of open spaces and greenery. It also made me realize how disconnected people are from where and how their products get made.

My motivation for Herd Supply Co. is twofold:
– Provide high quality, long lasting home goods featuring wool and other natural materials. Connecting customers to the stories of where their products came from can strengthen local supply chains. Our wool products are hypoallergenic, fire resistant, antimicrobial and antibacterial, making it an ideal (and infinitely flufflable) material for pillows and dog beds.
– Help create a living wage for small farmers. One way Herd Supply Co. does this is by buying wool deemed undesirable, helping them to recuperate the cost for shearing, feed, etc.

This loan is special because:

It helps a business overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.
