A loan helped with the startup costs of opening the first clean beauty & wellness shop in Tulsa, OK.

Makaela's story

I grew up in Bartlesville, OK with dreams of a big city and a life far from here! Can my small town gals relate? After getting my bachelors degree at Oklahoma State University, I bounced around a few states until I found my place for the last 3 years in Dallas, TX. But then last year, something changed and I really started to crave my roots. My husband and I tossed the idea around about moving to Tulsa to be closer to family, and about that time... I saw a post on Mother Road Market's Instagram about a startup business competition for the new Shops at Mother Road Market, any new retail business could enter, even if it was just in the idea phase. Everything about it and the timing couldn't have been more kismet. The next few months I spent many long nights creating a business plan, learning about startup costs, and drafting mood boards. I pitched it to Mother Road Market, hosted a hugely successful pop up test shop, and… (drumroll please…) I won! We quit our "dream" jobs, packed up our Uptown apartment, and headed off to pursue a dream thats so much bigger than what we gave up. So here I am in Tulsa! Falling in love all over again with this amazing city in my home state with my husband and dog by my side, and finally feeling like I've found my place.
