Kiva interviewed Teresa, the president of the group. In the photo she is seated second to the left, wearing glasses. Teresa sells milk products, butter and artisanal cheeses, which she distributes from door to door. Her dream is to have an established business in the city centre so that she can improve her quality of life. She will invest this loan in merchandise, bags and containers. Teresa said that she very much appreciates Fondo Esperanza's quick delivery of loans.
Temuco is the capital of the Araucanía region. It is located 670 kilometres south of Santiago (the capital of Chile) and possesses a series of lake-side spa resorts and striking native flora and fauna. This region is also noteworthy for being the region where 50% of the existing indigenous Mapuche community live.

Este banco comunal es llamado Forjando Sueños y está conformado por 16 socias dedicadas principalmente a la venta de ropa usada, joyas, perfumes, verduras, leña, carbón y costuras.
La socia entrevistada fue Teresa, quien es la presidenta del grupo. En la foto se encuentra sentada en 2º lugar de izquierda a derecha, y usa lentes. Ella vende productos lácteos, mantequilla y quesillos artesanales, los cuales distribuye puerta a puerta. Su sueño es tener un negocio establecido en un lugar
céntrico de la ciudad, con el fin de mejorar su calidad de vida.Ella invertirá este préstamo en mercadería, bolsas y envases.
Teresa comenta que aprecia en gran manera la rápida entrega de los préstamos en Fondo Esperanza.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
