A loan helped to buy 1,000 egg-laying hens and organic feed for them.

Thoranong's story

Thoranong is 30 years old and has started an organic chicken farm in his native area of northern Thailand. He is a member of the Karen tribe in Chiang Rai, Thailand, which is one of several ethnic groups who make their homes across the mountain ranges of Southern China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand.

For his entire life, Thoranong has cultivated rice on family land in the mountains near his home. However, because prices of his goods fluctuate, his income is very unpredictable and rarely provides enough to support his family. Therefore, he decided to work with Hilltribe Organics to start raising organic eggs. This would be his 3rd loan with Kiva.

Thoranong wants to purchase 1,000 egg-laying hens and organic feed to raise on his family's farmland. Selling the eggs will provide a continuous monthly income for his family and will allow them to clear his family's debt.

This loan is special because:

It supports vulnerable hill tribe communities in the northern region of Thailand.
