A loan of $350 helped purchasing seeds and fertilizer.

Elena's story

Elena is 27 years old. She lives in her parents’ home with her 6-year-old daughter (who was the child of her first marriage), her current husband, and their 5-month-old son.

For 5 years Elena has made a living growing lettuce, corn, potatoes, and peas; her husband can only help her during his free time, since he works for their province’s council. She cultivates her own fields, including some that she inherited from her father, who taught her all of the agricultural techniques that she now uses. Elena likes planting lettuce because it is profitable and there is much demand for it in the market. In the future she plans to construct her own house to that she and her children will have an adequate quality of life, while also increasing her production.

This is Elena’s first loan with Kiva partner MFP, and she assures us that she likes working in the communal bank, where she promises to make each of her payments on time so that she won’t give the other members of her group a bad impression. She will use the 1000 soles she is requesting to purchase a bag of pea seeds and two bags of fertilizer.
