Confiance ["confidence"] Group's story

The seven members of the Confiance [“Confidence”] group, six married women and one single woman, average 39 years of age and three children and live in monogamous families in Ouayerma I, a district in the town of Sikasso (the third administrative region of Mali). They collaborate with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to better satisfy their customers’ needs. This would be their tenth joint loan, with the previous nine loans having been duly reimbursed. They are engaged in various business activities, such as selling food condiments, ginger, heating wood, potatoes, soaps and shoes. Kadi S., the group’s leader, buys and resells condiments. Her business is well-known and popular in Sikasso, where she has a lot of customers. With this new loan she plans to purchase packs of condiments of various types and quality grades. She buys her stock at the big market of Sikasso and in nearby villages. Her goods are sold mostly for cash at the different markets in Sikasso as well as in residential areas, to a customer base composed of both women and men. The members of the Confiance group anticipate obtaining a monthly income of 13,500 West African francs for each member, a part of which will be put aside as savings and the rest reinvested in the business.
