A loan of $1,400 helped a member to buy balloons, gum, and candy to sell.

Ruth Y Esther 1 Group's story

R. is the coordinator of her group Ruth Y Esther (Ruth and Esther), and her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients generally. Her group is located in the Samana peninsuL., a lush, rugged area with a nascent tourism industry where running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unreliable. She makes her home here in a simple, rented structure as a single mother with two children.

R. is excited to be taking her fourth loan with Esperanza, after having successfully repaid her previous loan and grown her business. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business selling assorted items in the street including, balloons, candy, mints, etc. She will use the profits for her children and family by purchasing medicine and school supplies, and towards saving to construct her own home. She hopes also to continue saving with Esperanza so that she can have a cushion when she can't work anymore She thanks you all for your support.

In this group: Rosa, Eulojia, Juana, Joselin, Juliana
