A loan helped to buy certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizers to expand her crop farm so that she can make more income and support her family.

Lilian's story

Meet Lilian (a 45-year-old mother with a golden smile and a mom of four). Lilian is an enthusiastic mom who has gained many benefits from dairy and crop farming. She has made profits, and earned independence and job security over the last few years. She is a committed and devoted farmer, who depends entirely on her farming business. Lilian has used part of her savings from her business to send her lovely children to school.

Lilian seeks a loan of 100,000 KES to buy certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizers to expand her crop farm. By scaling up her business, she will reduce production costs and increase output. Her strategy is to use the returns from the investment to buy more farm inputs.

Lack of farm inputs is a major problem that leads to closing of many farms, due to poor quantity and quality of yields. Unlike most microfinances in Kenya that have imposed very complicated procedures on funds acquisition, thereby discouraging smallholder farmers, Juhudi Kilimo is working closely with Kiva to make loan acquisition for a smallholder farmers easy and convenient.

Through this intervention, movement of funds in the rural communities has increased, thereby alleviating rural poverty. Lilian should, therefore, be able to increase her profits, which will elevate her family's standard of living.

Kindly lend to her this season and brighten her spirit!

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
