A loan helped a member to purchase hybrid seeds and fertilizer to improve harvests of maize.

Juma's Group's story

Pictured above is Juma, often described as an extremely reliable person. He is 45 years old and has six children. As a group leader, he is representing his group of 14 farmers in the Mumias District, Kenya.

Juma is returning this season to work with One Acre Fund again as this means he is able to get the best quality fertilizer and hybrid seeds, which is why he decided to join in the first place. Juma says that he is happy to have made that decision because, since he first joined in 2016, he has been able to consistently feed his family. This has improved his day-to-day life significantly. Juma will use the profits from this season to invest in a business.

The group will use this loan to purchase seeds and fertilizer to plant a total of 11.25 acres. Given that some members of the group will also be purchasing a solar light with this loan, the group will also receive a total of two solar lights.

In this group: Juma, Edward, Rukia, Musa, Zaituna, Joseph, Lilian, Mohammed, Phylice, Joyce, Taina, Halima, Lilian, Coleta

This loan is special because:

It supports smallholder farmers to purchase seeds and solar lanterns.
