Lidia Pedro's story

Lidia Pedro M. was born in the province of Gaza in the south of Mozambique. She is 46 years old, married, and has 5 children who are 27, 20, 17, 13 and 9 years old. Four of her children attend school. Lidia only studied through 6th grade, and didn't continue because of a lack of financial resources. She lives in her own home with her family and supports her mother by sending her money.

Lidia left Gaza for Boane with her parents during the Mozambican civil war. She has owned her own business for more than 6 years and doesn't have anyone else working for her. She makes some 2000-2500 Meticales each month. She uses this money to cover household expenses and also saves some in her bank account.

Lidia has never taken out loans with other banks. She found out about Hluvuku [the Kiva field partner] through friends who also work with the institution. This is her first loan, for 11,000 Meticales. She plans to use the money to buy packs of used clothing in order to increase her stock of merchandise.

She promises to repay this loan back as stated, in order to be eligible for others in the future, She would like to take out more loans to put towards improving her shop.
