Mrs. Phal P. is 40 years old and the president of a sixteen-member loan group in Toul Krosang village in Kandal province. With the loan, the group members hope to increase their incomes and improve their families' living conditions. Mrs. Phal P. owns a general store where she sells groceries. Her husband is a farmer who rents a small plot of land to cultivate lotus plants. In order to support both businesses, Mrs. Phal P. is asking for a loan to buy fertilizer for her husband's farming as well as more groceries to sell. The couple has four children; one is a farm laborer while the other three attend the local school.
