A loan helped pay for salon sink installations, accessible parking, and working capital.

Erika's story

Being raised by a single mother was traumatic, when I was 11 years old family friends in the Napa Valley gave me an opportunity to live with them. I quickly developed an Entreprenurial spirt when I was told " If I wanted to go, I had to figure it out for myself" and so I did! I racked leaves, mowed lawns and sold golf balls back the golfers at the RV Resort. We lived in a trailer park between HWY 5 and the Sacramento River across from a dairy farm. This is not what I had envisioned for myself. It took me one month to plan and save to purchase my own Grey Hound Bus Ticket.

I started my first business when I was 23 years old, a non-profit for the Spinal Cord Injury Community in Napa (Napa SCI Network). In the capacity of the Executive Director I developed the knowledge to operate a successful business and grant write to help people. This is first time telling my story and applying for a KIVA loan which feels somewhat similar. Something I have learned now as an Entrepreneur and a Business Owner is when to ask for help. I have so much support from family and friends donating their time and skills which is making this all possible.

At 40 years old I decided to back to school for an Esthetician Degree, attending full time and graduated December 2018. I opened my first location before doing so, a 350 sq. ft. studio quickly outgrowing it and moving up to 1000 sq. ft. The staff was recruited from Design Team(Hair & Make Up) we donated our time to 28 events in 6 months. This experience gave us the skills to work at a "Fashion Show" speed and develop a professional mindset.
