A loan helped to purchase more charcoal to sell.

Thelena's story

Meet 42-year-old Thelena, from Liberia. She is a widow with six children. All of her children are schooling and live at home. Thelena attended school up to college. She runs a retail business selling charcoal. For the past 19 years, she has been managing her sales. Her late husband gave her money to start the business and she learned how to sell by herself. She sells six days a week. She uses a car to transport supplies to her business site and faces no problems with her sales.

She requested this loan from BRAC Liberia, Kiva's field partner, to purchase more charcoal to sell and increase her business. She likes her business because it gives profits and she is proud of her business because it sends her children to school. In the future she wants to send her children to school and build her house. Thelena wishes to say thanks.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
