A loan of $1,100 helped pay for the purchase of a deep fat fryer and an industrial cooking range.

Mayra Alexandra's story

Mayra T. is a member of the Sol Naciente (Rising Sun) Communal Bank. She lives in the suburbs of the city of Cuenca, well known for its rivers, beautiful architecture, restaurants and warm, friendly people. Our member is 31 years old, married and mother of three children ages 13, 12 and 7. All the children are basic education students and her husband works in a factory making stucco ceiling tiles. Although they don’t live in a home of their own, they live in the house of a family member.

For the past seven years, Mayra has tidied and cleaned houses from Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm. On the weekends she sells “salchipapas” (a type of fast food made of fried potatoes and sausages) at the local sports fields. She has been doing this for the past 5 years. As she is a high-spirited woman, she has always looked for ways to advance herself. She is now in her 4th cycle with the communal bank and all the loans have been used for her business and for her home. With the money she receives from the loan she is currently soliciting, she will pay for a deep fat fryer and an industrial cooking range that she bought from her bosses in order to expand her fast food business.

Her goal is to own her own home.
