A loan helped to buy additional farmland.

Rahila's story

Rahila is a hardworking and ambitious farmer who wants to expand the land she has under cultivation so she can earn higher profits from farming. As a member of Babban Gona, Rahila now has access to high-quality inputs and enhanced farming services that will help her increase her yields. Furthermore, through training programs, Rahila now practices farming in a more sustainable manner. For example, the agronomy education Rahila receives focuses on micro-dosing fertilizers to lessen their environmental impact and increase yields. Rahila expects to reap forty bags/hectare of maize from this year's harvest, more than double the national Nigerian average of eighteen bags/hectare. She has requested a Harvest Advance loan to earn more profit on her maize instead of selling the grain at harvest, when prices are low due to the high supply of maize.

This Harvest Advance loan will provide Rahila with cash equivalent to the value of her maize at harvest. Babban Gona will then help Rahila store her maize and sell it at a higher price over the next six to nine months, which will guarantee higher returns. This is crucial for Rahila because she plans to use the increased income she earns to buy additional farmland to have an even bigger harvest next season.

This loan is special because:

It supports smallholder farmers and helps them increase yields.
