Amara's story

Growing up, I loved mathematics. It felt like a giant puzzle you were trying to find the answer to and that pursuit motivated me. More importantly, I had two amazing math teachers (Ms. Lyons and Mrs. Harp) who greatly impacted my educational experience. They were both Black women who created a mirror for me showing me that my gender and race doesn't limit my abilities in this area.

My love for mathematics and confidence in my abilities led me to pursue a major in Chemical Engineering. However, by the end of my junior year, I realized engineering wasn't my passion and that I wanted to have a more direct impact on my community as a Black woman. I always considered teaching math as a profession but didn't know how to transition into the education field. One day walking through campus, I saw a Teach for America sign and decided to attend the information session. During the presentation, I realized this was my way into teaching and applied to be a corps member two weeks later.

I was accepted into the 2008 Charlotte corps where I taught high school mathematics. I absolutely fell in love with teaching children mathematics and haven't looked back since! I had great success as a math teacher averaging 90+% pass rates on state exams for 6 semesters. However, I wanted a larger impact and began coaching teachers as an educational consultant. As a consultant, I really missed the daily engagements with my students but I knew teaching in one classroom in one school wasn't the impact I wanted. Through the continuous support of my loved ones, hours of hard work and faith, I was able to start my business where the goal of the organization is represented by its name - Math without Limits.
