A loan helped to buy farm inputs such as fertilizer and herbicides to enable this single mom with a good credit history to grow more crops and create hope for her this 2019.

Felista's story

When the moon disappears in the clouds to pave way for the piercing African sun, most people are still asleep, but this is not the case for Felista (a single mom of 3 pictured in her simple house). She is awake and has started her day preparing her family. When her children are off to school, she picks up her farming tools and heads to her farm.

Felista, who lives below the poverty level, is one of the most respected women in Kerugoya in the central region of Kenya. She is a very hardworking and self-driven mother.

Felista is known in her village because of her resilience and never-give-up nature. When she learned about Juhudi and Kiva from a Juhudi Kilimo loan officer, she became interested in the good work that Kiva does to support smallholder farmers.

She was happy that she has access to a reliable micro-finance, and attended regular training sessions to ensure that she learned about savings and loans.

In her farm, she has been keeping dairy cows and nurturing the growth of various crops. The main challenge that this enterprising woman has is the high cost of farming inputs in her area.

She has borrowed this loan so that she can buy quality farming inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides, which she plans to use on her farm.

With these inputs, Felista will be assured of a good harvest, which will consequently reflect in her pocket.

Dear lenders! If there is someone you should lend to before 2019 lapses, then that person is Felista.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
