Maria Mercedes's story

Maria Mercedes T. is 49 years old. She is single, and she does not have children. She lives in the Guaranda canton in the Bolívar province.

She is a member of the Grupo Enmanuel Communal Bank. It is an area that is located 45 minutes from the Guaranda Canton, the capital of the Bolívar province. There are 17 members in all. It is a farming and livestock community. They are indigenous people, and they all speak Quechua.

Maria works in farming to increase the family economy. The crops that do the best are corn, wheat, and potatoes. She also has a store where she sells basic needs products, and she sells these products in her house. What she grows she sells in the Guaranda wholesale market every six months.

The principal cultural event of the area is the Carnival, which is celebrated every year in February. Also, Maria likes to walk.

She is requesting a loan to buy supplies for working in the field. Mostly she will buy chemical and natural fertilizers. Her goal is to have a good economic activity for her family. The challenges she faces are climate problems and illnesses that affect the crops.
