A loan helped to buy more clay soil and pay labor for her bricks.


Mercy's story

Mercy is 19 years old and lives in the town of Kyengera in the Kyengera region of Uganda. For the past 3 years, Mercy has been working hard to manage her bricks business which carry's out brick laying.

To help expand her business, Mercy has requested a loan of 1,600,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more clay soil, and pay labor for her bricks. It will help Mercy to generate greater profits and Mercy will realize more profits from the expanded business. She will be in position to improve on her standards of living by catering for home basic needs. Mercy hopes that in the future she will be able to operate her brick laying on a bigger scale.

Mercy is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both as a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and as a forum for life-skills training.
