A loan helped to buy more sodas and green bananas.

Stella's story

Stella is 22 years old and lives in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past 2 years, Stella has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food like green bananas, rice, beef, potatoes and tea.

Stella applied for a loan of 1,500,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda, to help expand her business. The loan will be used to buy more sodas and green bananas, which would help Stella generate more profit. Stella will use the profit she makes on her business to pay her children's school fees, purchase personal items for herself such as clothing, pay bills and provide her family's basic needs which helps to improve their standard of living. Stella hopes that in the future, she will be able to open a hotel in order to generate more income. She also hopes to buy a plot of land on which, she would build her permanent house.

Stella is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to Microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
