Gina's Group's story

Gina D. is from the town of Ilagan. She is 40 years old. Gina is the group leader of a fifteen-member group loan offered by ASKI. While each member of the group receives an individual loan, they are all collectively responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. The official name of this borrowing group is Gina D..

Gina is married and has two school-aged children. To make a living, Gina owns and operates a specialized retail store, selling clothing and shoes in the local community. Gina has been engaged in her business for over four years and earns approximately $435 a month from these activities.

In 2004, Gina joined ASKI to gain access to financial services to help improve her living situation and ability to engage in business activities. Gina has successfully repaid a previous loan of 30,000 PHP from ASKI. Gina is requesting a new loan of 30,000 PHP which will be used to purchase additional products to sell. This will be her 12th loan from ASKI. She plans to use the additional revenue generated from the business to pay the tuition fees of her children.

ASKI is one of the most successful micro-finance institutions in the Philippines. It has 25 branches covering the Central and Northeastern areas. Its clients are mostly farmers, fisherfolk and small entrepreneurs.
