Che's story

B. is a widow who has five children. She lives in Ntabessi Nkwen Mezam Division NWR- Cameroon. B. and her entire family live in a house with three rooms. She often has to battle some life challenges, including inadequate funds to pay tuition for her children, ill health, and death of close family members. “Things have really been difficult, even when I try very hard…” she said.

She has borrowed and repaid four loans since she joined GHAPE in 2003. With previous loans, she grew vegetables. She is planning to expand this business. She is planning to use part of her loan to repair her house. She states that the business of vegetables has been quite successful in the past and she attributes the success to her business location, reasonable prices, good marketing skills and experience, and demand for her produce. She is optimistic that she will make profit and provide for her family.

About GHAPE:

The Grounded and Holistic Approach for People's Empowerment (GHAPE) is a non-profit NGO based in Bamenda, Cameroon. GHAPE works towards the empowerment of the poor and poverty alleviation through a highly multi-faceted approach. Every client is trained in business management, basic health, life skills, financial management, profits and losses statement, and family values. Clients are also required to contribute a small amount into a personal savings account; most clients save much more than the minimum requirement. GHAPE instils a sense of family and community within its clients and staff and has developed a strong bond of trust between the organization and its clients.
