A loan helped to buy organic hens and organic feed for them.

Mito's story

Mito is 39 years old and has started an organic chicken farm in her native northern Thailand. She is a member of the Akha tribe in Chiang Rai, Thailand, which is one of several ethnic groups who make their homes across the mountain ranges of Southern China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand.

For her entire life, Mito has grown vegetables on family land in the mountains near her home. However, her farm produce prices fluctuate significantly, which makes her income very unpredictable and rarely enough to support her family. Therefore, Mito decided to work with Hilltribe Organics to start producing organic eggs. This will be her first loan with Kiva.

With this loan, she wants to purchase 700 egg-laying hens to raise on her farmland and organic feed for the hens. Selling these eggs will provide a continuous monthly income for her family, allow Mito to send her children to school, and provide a better livelihood.

This loan is special because:

It supports vulnerable hill tribe communities in the northern region of Thailand.
