Ms. Chona L., a thirty-year-old single mother from Remedios, Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental is our featured entrepreneur. She has one son. To make a living, she presently operates a sari-sari (variety) store. She has been in the business for six years and earns an average net income of not less than PHP 3,000. Upon hearing the about Paglaum MPC, she joined the cooperative in the 2009. As an active member, she can request a loan of up to PHP 5,000 for capital to invest in her sari-sari store and in her other line of business, in which she buys and sells dried fish and longganisa (sausage). The future income from this loan will be used for loan repayments, sustaining her family's basic needs, and saving for her child's future.
About Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative
Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PMPC) was founded in 1992 by the beneficiaries, parents and staff of the Paglaum Community Development Foundation to address economic and livelihood activities for sustainability. The organization operates in the northwestern provinces of Mindanao and Visayas.
In the local vernacular, “paglaum” means “hope.” The initial foundation is dedicated to child development through a holistic approach. The goal is to build self-reliance and expand opportunity so the poorest of the poor can help themselves.
