Flor Civilina's story

Flor Civilina Guaman C., age 25, lives in a common law relationship and has two children. She lives in the canton of San Miguel in Bolívar province.

Flor is a member of the Calzado Solidario communal bank, which is located 15 minutes from the San Miguel canton on the road to the coast. This has 19 members in all, most of who are engaged in agriculture and the raising of small animals.

She works in agriculture in order to increase the finances of her family. The crops that do best are corn and potatoes. She also plants a small quantity of vegetables. She sells her products in the San Miguel market and in the city of Quito’s wholesale market.

The principal cultural event of the area is the Carnival, which is celebrated every year in February. She also enjoys the festival of the patron saint San Miguel for a reunion with her family.

Flor is applying for a loan in order to buy land so that she can plant crops on her own fields and obtain income to help her family and, above all, help with the education of her children. Her goal is to have a good business for her family. The challenges she faces are climate problems and sicknesses that affect her crops.
