A loan helped a member to expand her animal husbandry business by buying more chickens and pigs.

La Democracia Joyabaj Group's story

Petronila, a 39-year-old mother of 8 children over the age of 3, is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “La Democracia Joyabaj” in the department/state of Quiche. This is a very rich cultural area where many different languages are spoken (Uspanteko, Ixil, Sakapulteko, K’iche and Spanish).

Petronila raises turkeys and she is expanding the business, adding chickens and pigs to her corrals. She is now requesting her second Kiva loan to buy more chickens and pigs. She will earmark funds for food, clothing, household expenses and education for her very large family.

There are seven ladies in the Trust Bank who have tortilla shops, sell delicious grilled corn, and raise animals. They learn to manage their loans in their monthly educational trainings when they learn about effective planning, budgeting, and investing. The women also learn about practical, everyday topics like good nutrition, proper hygiene, health practices and the use of medicinal plants. Their self esteem is raised when they gain information and they feel more empowered. Friendship Bridge calls this effective combination of loans, education, health care and other services, “Microcredit Plus.”

Kiva investors, partnering with Friendship Bridge, are highly valued by Petronila and her friends. Thank you to each of you!
