A loan of $600 helped purchase and sale of soft drinks.

Fernando's story

Fernando C. was born in the city of Maputo in southern Mozambique. He is 37 years old, and a single father of two children who are 12 and 3 years old. The eldest attends school. Fernando only completed the first grade, and didn't continue due to lack of resources and the negligence of his parents. He lives with his children in his own home, and also supports a brother who lives with him.

He left Maputo with his mother after she left his father, and they relocated their residence to Boane. He currently lives in this district and has owned his own shop for over 17 years. He works from 7 am until 9 pm, and mainly sells beer and soft drinks. He has no employees.

He earns around 1000 MZN a day, and uses the money for household expenses and saves some through a Xitique (a traditional savings system). He's never taken out a loan with other banks, and learned about Hluvuku through his friend Mr. Antonio Mundlovu who is also a client of the organization. This is his fourth loan, and is in the amount of 17000 MZN. He plans to use the money to purchase products (beer, wine, soft drinks and others) to increase the quality of the merchandise in his establishment. The earlier loans were for 8000 MZN, 12000 MZN and 15000 MZN, and were all used for the same purpose.

In the future, he hopes to apply for additional loans to increase the size of his commercial establishment and provide better service to his customers.
