A loan helped a member to meet customer demand by buying an additional sewing machine.

Las Anonas Chichi Group's story

Eight women, who live in the mountains of the department/state of Quiche, formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Anonas Chichi”. The Anona tree (custard apple, cherimoya) grows in warm climates, with very sweet fruit that is quite nutritious. Ana, a married mother of three children aged 5 to 10 years old, is a member of the group who has a traditional textile business. She takes custom orders in various markets for colorful bags.

Ana would like to expand the business and sew sweatshirts with regional designs. She has three sewing machines and can produce 50 garments each month! Fortunately, there is a lot of demand and she needs to buy an additional sewing machine. Ana is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy a much needed sewing machine. Her goals are to raise the standard of living for her household, increase income and invest in the education of her children.

Ana is very enthusiastic about the monthly educational trainings of her Trust Bank. The ladies learn about effective business practices, healthy habits, how to care for their families best and how to empower themselves. Ana adds, “These trainings help women like me who only have a sixth grade education. In this way, we learn how to invest our loans wisely and effectively care for our families. The information helps us better manage our businesses, which include the fabrication of traditional textiles, raising animals and convenience stores.”

Kiva investors fill a vital need by supplying capital for these loans. Thank you!
